The Ultimate Luxury Golf Holiday at Mallorca’s Oldest Course

Published on 12/03/2016 by Finest Holidays - Luxury Travel

There are many different reasons to visit Mallorca, from culture to cuisine, to landscape and climate the island has as much, if not more, to offer than any other Mediterranean paradise. Golf remains one of the big draws, and with a luxury villa at Son Vida you can enjoy the best accommodation and the best greens in Europe.

Spain has great weather for the world’s greatest game, it also has some of the world’s finest courses, and in Son Vida, Mallorca can lay its claim at the top of the leaderboard.

It wasn’t the first course to be built on the island, but it is now the oldest, after the Spanish Civil War tragically stymied the first gold project.

When it did open it did so with a bang – unveiled by Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1964. The course has since lived up to that wonderful tee-off.

It has been on the European Tour, and the eyes of the world were one of the game’s greatest stars in 1990 when Severiano Ballesteros won the second of his three triumphs in the first five Balearic Opens in a spectacular play off win.

The course was redesigned in 2001 by Kurt Rossknecht, who has maintained the relatively-short course’s reputation for challenging dog-legs and its signature 18th hole. The first half of the course features tight, challenging holes, before opening out into the second nine. That 18th, with two doglegs a lake and a stream, is a worthy challenge to finish your round with.

Spectacular views of the Bay of Palma Bay through mature woodlands make Son Vida worthy of a visit, even if you’ve never touched a set of clubs.

Mallorca is an ideal location for a golfing holiday with more than 20 high quality courses. The islands other charms – beautiful beaches with luxurious beach clubs, fine restaurants, exclusive clubs, an exciting cosmopolitan capital city, Palma, and a stunning mountainous interior beloved of top cyclists – are all easily accessible from the mainly coastal golf resorts.

Son Vida is well placed to access the exciting city of Palma, where you’ll find history and heritage as well as the best luxury brand shops and fantastic cuisine. There are four Michelin-starred restaurants – Simply Fosh, Es Fum, Zaranda and Es Racó d’Es Teix – within easy reach, and Es Vi is rated as one of the best tapas restaurants on the island.

It’s also possible to stay at or near many of these luxurious golfing havens.

At Son Vida you’ll find luxury villas of the very highest quality.
