Singita Grumeti, Serengeti National Park

Sasakwa Lodge rambles along a rocky promontory perched above the rolling plains. It is among the most deluxe accommodations ever built in East Africa. The entrancing view from on high is an ever-changing tapestry of grasslands, clouds and wildlife as they move across the landscape. The view within of long elegant hallways and inviting sitting rooms is faithful to the architecture and furnishings of the most splendid colonial era homes. Were Karen Blixen, the author of Out of Africa, to arrive at Sasakwa today, she would recognise a spot imbued with the same aesthetic that she lavished on her beloved home in the Ngong hills outside Nairobi.

The lodge consists nine luxurious cottages and one villa. At any one time the lodge can accommodate 34 guests. Cottage configurations: 6 x 1 bedroom, 2 x 2 bedrooms, 1 x 3 bedrooms, 1 x 4 bedrooms (villa).

Singita Sasakwa Lodge is one of three Singita lodges in this enormous private concession (340 000 acres), which means that you’ll have this wild stretch of Africa all to yourself. Sasakwa Lodge is built in the style of an Edwardian manor house. Stone walls, deep verandas, high ceilings, stately furniture, silverware and ornamental pieces complete the picture. Each cottage has a private infinity-edge pool overlooking ‘where the land stretches to forever’. The bedrooms with inviting four-posters are beautifully appointed, displaying typical African influences with touches of wood, leather and grass, alongside crisp linens, imported chandeliers and hand-crafted furniture.

The Villa at Sasakwa Lodge: Perched on a hilltop with awe-inspiring views of the Serengeti plains, the villa has been built in the style of an 1900’s East African ranch house with dramatic chandeliers, leather and sparkling crystal adding plush opulence to the villa. The grand bedrooms with inviting four-poster are spacious and beautifully appointed and the enormous bathrooms offer wrap-around views of the Serengeti. The villa has 4 en-suite bedrooms, a living room, dining room, small kitchen, a nanny flat and a private infinity plunge pool in the garden. The Villa sleeps a maximum of 8 people and is booked out exclusively.

Besides the obvious natural attractions Tanzania has to offer, the country’s towns and cities also make pleasant stops, with plenty to do and see. Many of Tanzania’s coastal cities were founded as port towns from which valuable goods were transported across the Indian Ocean by sailing dhow. On the mainland, many inland towns were important rest stops for trade caravans on their way to Central Africa or Lake Victoria, or returning back to the East African coast. In the northern highlands, many small towns were founded by the Germans as centres of colonial administration and agriculture. Today, Tanzania’s towns and cities still specialize in trade and agriculture, and are the centres of economic activity in their regions. Besides their obvious importance for the country’s local economy, the towns and cities of Tanzania have many historical and cultural sites of interest to visitors.
